Pier Fishing Could Start Heating Up

Last week we had surface water temperatures holding steady around 70 degrees from the beach out to 400 feet of water. But the northwest blow we had pushed all the warm water out and replaced it with some cold water, down to as low as 48 degrees along the beach to 60 degrees in 60 feet of water. We finally got the fish figured out, then Mother Nature throws her 2 cents in.

Cool City Charters fished this past Thursday the day after we had that NW wind. Without a clue where to start, we decided around 50 feet and started looking. Action was fair in the first hour and a half producing 4 jacks (small Kings) and a small Brown. We got a call around 6:30AM, the Kings are off the river mouth. This time of year the mature Salmon are starting their pre spawn ritual and if any river water starts flowing...it's the place to be.

This mud water acts like a magnet for these 4 year old Kings. One hour of fast action put 7 Kings up to 24 pounds and a monster Brown over 37 inches long and weighing a whopping 27.6 pounds. The biggest Brown Cool City ever got! But as fast as this action started it ended the next day. Friday morning the river quit flowing, mud water dispersed and the fish left.  Time to start searching again.

Best baits for Cool City for those huge Kings were plugs by Moonshine Lures.  Moonshine baits are well known for their super glow spoons, which also worked great, but this past year they added plugs to their line of products.  These super glow plugs in Ratchet Jaw, Crab face and Agent Orange did an excellent job in this muddy river water.  Make sure you stock up for this fall feeding frenzy we are expecting in the up coming weeks.

Check out the lures we've been using on my web site under lures used.

Good Luck and Good Fishing!
