Two Rivers Welcomes New Wellness and Physical Fitness Center

(January 25, 2005)

A new wellness and physical fitness center in the former St. Luke’s Catholic Church at 1820 Jefferson St. plans to open by early spring. The sale of the former church and adjacent rectory was finalized on Jan. 21.

The Two Rivers LIFE Center is being developed by Sam Gabuzzi of Sports and Leisure Development Inc. of Glenview, Ill. Gabuzzi explained that LIFE stands for Lifestyle Improvement For Everyone.

"This is not your run of the mill exercise club," he said. "We help people improve their lives by getting physically fit through exercise. We educate people on how to live healthier lifestyles with medically focused programming based on their individual needs."

A Center for Health and Fitness for Two Rivers and its Neighboring Communities

Gabuzzi has 20 years of experience designing and developing hospital, corporate and government wellness centers and programs. He oversees the operations of 46 federal fitness sites. He is also director of business development for new fitness/wellness centers and programs.

Two Rivers Economic Development Supervisor Dan Pawlitzke said, “Two Rivers L.I.F.E. Center will fill an important need in the area. It is designed to improve the overall health and lifestyles of its members.” He said a 1997 survey by the city’s recreation department showed that more than 80 percent of both adults and students said it was important or very important to have a fitness facility in the city.

Gabuzzi says the center will have 40 pieces of new, top-quality exercise equipment and will offer wellness, fitness, and lifestyle training. Services include nutrition and weight management classes, personal training, cardiac rehabilitation maintenance programming, sports medicine and performance training, aerobics, pre-and post-natal exercise classes, smoking cessation, CPR training, a physical therapy step down exercise program, stress and diabetes management, massage therapy, self-defense courses and the popular stationary cycling class called “Spinning.” Corporate memberships will be available to help companies identify their specific wellness needs, improve employee health, and reduce ever-rising health care costs.

Gabuzzi said members first receive a fitness assessment based on the guidelines of the American College of Sports Medicine. “We measure cardio-respiratory endurance, body composition, flexibility, muscular strength, and muscular endurance to develop a fitness profile,” he said.

The profile will help the center staff design a personalized exercise program to improve fitness and overall health. “Periodic reassessments ensure that each person’s exercise program is working and will identify any changes that are needed,” Gabuzzi added. Center staff will work with each member on exercise form, technique, and proper use of equipment before and during their exercise program.

Gabuzzi will function as director of operations and expects to employ two full-time and one part-time exercise specialists, and two full-time and one half-time customer service staff. Gabuzzi is also looking to lease the lower level of the church and the rectory. Interested people should contact him at 847-724-2401.

First National Bank will provide building and construction financing for the purchase and remodeling of the former church facility.

The City of Two Rivers is providing financial incentives through its revolving loan program and will assist in securing state tax credits for hiring individuals through the State of Wisconsin Development Zone program. Site Meter
